Viet
Nam:
1. General description of why an area is selected
2. Specific description of the location
West lake and the related channels, Hanoi
city
The largest lake of the lakes in Hanoi (4.13 km2, 6.0 m above sea
level), a semi - closed water body with small inflow and outflow -
channels (Tolich river). It received daily amount of waste water of
about 10,000 m3 from surrounding urban areas. This lake are being
developed for various recreational activities including fishing, boating
and sightseeing. The rapid urbanization is the serious pollution potential
of West lake.
Ba Be lake, Cao Bang Province (about 300 km far from Hanoi)
The only significant natural upland lake in the North of Vietnam (4.5
km2, 145 m above sea level). The lake is important for the life of
the local people belonging to ethnic minority groups as the source
of water, navigation and transportation. The pollution of POPs as
alkyl phenols, PCBs, PAHs... in this area might be low due to low
rate of industrial and urbanization of surrounding area. But in other
side, DDT still being used for malaria control in upland area of Vietnam.
It is expected to find out the accumulation of DDTs in samples collected
at Ba Be lake.
River and Channels in Ho Chi Minh city
There are several reasons for the pollution by POPs of river and channel
in Ho Chi Minh city: domestic, industry, agricultural. Some data of
OCPs residuals in water and sediment samples in Ho Chi Minh city were
provided by Prof. Tanabe (1993). Selected points will be chosen for
the sampling in 2002 in order to get the comparison of available data.
Ten samples were collected in Saigon River. In Rach Ben Nghe and Thi
Nghe (the 2 main discharged water Chanels in HoChi Minh city), 9 samples
were collected in July 2002.
3. Geographic coordinates of the
sampling locations
They will be specified later.
4. Sampling plan
West lake and the related channels
Samples will be collected in various point around West lake (inflow
- outflow channels, near the old industry area - 10 points) and along
the Tolich River - the biggest channel connected to West lake (10
points).
Ba Be lake, Cao Bang Province
It is expected to find out the accumulation of DDTs in samples collected
at Ba Be lake. Number of sample (7 points)
River and Channels
In the first sampling (July 2002), 9 samples were collected in CuChi
province - a typical agricultural area (90 km far from HoChi Minh
city).
