Dr. Yasuyuki Shibata of National Institute for Environmental Studies (Environmental Chemistry Division), Japan, comments on the evolution of the regional POPs monitoring programme under the Stockholm convention.

UNU International Symposium on Ecosystem Impacts of POPs
Environmental Research and Training Center will host the 2005 UNU International Symposium on 26 -27 April 2005, in Bangkog, Thailand. The symposium is the sixth one in a series under a UNU programme focusing on Environmental Monitoring and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere. Speakers from the region and invited experts from the world over will discuss the role of various sources of POPs pollution in coastal areas, particularly highlighting impacts of POPs on coastal ecosystems.

UNU-INWEH - UNESCO International Course, Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems
This international course will be held at the Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, India, from 15-29 June 2005. This course brings a multidisciplinary team of lecturers focusing on assessing, monitoring and conserving biodiversity in mangrove ecosystems. The deadline for receiving applications is 30 April 2005.

The Environment in Asia Pacific Harbours
The latest book by Dr. Wolanski of Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australia examines how science can provide solutions to environmental degradation problems in the estuarine and coastal zone in the Asia Pacific region. This region has many coastal mega-cities and mega-harbors that have caused coastal environmental degradation.
