The report presents an overview of the status and threats to the coastal environment in Asia and the Pacific, and reflects on the existing efforts for its protection. full text International Conference on Conserving Our Coastal Environment During a recent international conference, held at UNU from 8-10 July, 2002, experts from around the world met for three day-long Symposia. The themes of the Symposia were Endocrine Disruptor Pollution in Asia and the Pacific, Coastal Management and Sustainable Development and Marine Ecology and Environment. conference report abstracts and presentations ![]() Environmental Monitoring and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere - Monitoring of POPs in the East Asian Region On July 15th, 2002, UNU signed an agreement of cooperation with Shimadzu Corporation of Kyoto to embark on a three-year (1999-2002) project. The project provides for the continuation of UNU's EDC monitoring and capacity development activities since 1996 in China, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. further information Up-coming ASPACO Meeting in Okinawa A meeting for the participants of the Asia-Pacific Co-operation for the Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources in Biosphere Reserves and Similar Managed Areas (ASPACO) will be held in Okinawa, Japan on 1-6 October 2002. The meeting will be jointly organised by UNESCO-MAB, UNU, International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), MAB-Japan, with the support from the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) and Ryukyus University, Okinawa, Japan. UNU-UNESCO International Course on Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems, 2003 Applications are now being accepted for the annual UNU-UNESCO International Course on Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems, to be held at the Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, India. The deadline for completed applications is the 31st October 2002. further information Ecosystem Monitoring on the Internet Global Terrestrial Observation Sites (GTOS) has developed an internet directory for research on ecosystem monitoring.
