from the Capacity Development Training Workshop for Monitoring of
POPs in the East Asian Hydrosphere
This workshop, supported by the Asia Pacific Network for Global
Change Research (APN), was held on 1-2 September, 2003, as part of
a series of capacity development training events on monitoring Persistent
Organic Pollutants (POPs) by the UNU Project: Environmental Monitoring
and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere - Monitoring of POPs
in the East Asian Region.

Fourth UNU-ORI Joint
International Workshop on Marine Environment - Ecosystem Conservation
in Coastal Areas
This event will be held in Otsuchi, Japan from 11-17 February, 2004.
It is held jointly by UNU, Ocean Research Institute of the University
of Tokyo and the Iwate Prefectural Government. This is the fourth
in a series of workshops that was initiated in 1999 including participation
by young scholars and researchers representing the countries in Asia
and the Asia-Pacific island nations.

UNU-INWEH - UNESCO International Course on Biodiversity in Mangrove
Ecosystems, Annamalai University, India, 5-19 April, 2004
A multidisciplinary team of lecturers will focus on assessing, monitoring
and conserving biodiversity in mangrove ecosystems. A limited number
of fellowships are available to qualified candidates from developing
countries. Application forms must be received at the Annamalai University
by 15 January 2004.

UNU International Symposium on Impacts
of POPs from Urban Areas
China-Japan Friendship
Center for Environmental Protection will host the 2004 UNU International
Symposium on 24-25th May, 2004 in Beijing, China. The symposium
is the fifth in a series under a UNU programme focusing on Environmental
Pollution and Governance in the East Asian Coastal Hydrosphere.
Speakers from the region and invited experts from other parts of
the world will discuss the role of various land-based emission sources
in POPs pollution in the coastal areas, particularly highlighting
the effects of pollution from urban areas.
