UNU International Symposium on
Impact of POPs from Urban Areas
This symposium was successfully held in Beijing, China, from 24-25 May
2004. It was hosted and organized by Sino-Japan Friendship Center for Environmental
Protection. The monitoring program highlighted in this symposium was implemented with
strong support of Shimadzu Corporation
(Japan). This symposium has brought more than 130 scientists and distinguished guest
speakers from East Asia and also such countries as Australia, Sweden, and USA.

The Fifth UNU-ORI
Joint International Workshop on Marine Environment
This event is planned to be held in Otsuchi, Japan, in the first week of
November 2004. It will be organized jointly by UNU, Ocean Research Institute of the
University of Tokyo and the Iwate Prefectural Government. This was the fifth in a series
of workshops that was initiated in 1999 involving young scholars and researchers from Asia
and the Asia-Pacific island nations.
As soon as the details of this workshop is solidified, necessary information will
be disseminated.

- UNESCO International Course, "Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems"
This international course was held at the Centre of Advanced Studies in
Marine Biology, Annamalai
University, India, from 31 May - 14 June 2004. This course brings a multidisciplinary
team of lecturers focusing on assessing, monitoring and conserving biodiversity in
mangrove ecosystems.

Asia Pacific (CZAP) Conference 2004
This conference will be held from 5-9 September in Brisbane, Australia.
The CZAP conference is organized as a response to an increasing need for sharing and
adopting of good, practical and feasible integrated coastal management programs.
