International Workshop on Regional Environmental Quality in the East Asian Coastal Hydrosphere: Environmental Quality Guidelines and Capacity Development
United Nations University (UNU), Kwangju Institute for Science and Technology (KJIST) and UNESCO held a two-day international workshop in Kwangju, Korea, 26-27th January, 2003. The workshop included presentations on the interpretation of the environmental monitoring data that has been collected by its partners in eight East Asian countries. Participants also discussed the development of guidelines for environmental quality in coastal and inland waters in the East Asian region, and the preparation of an interlaboratory calibration exercise.

Training Session for Environmental Monitoring and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere - Monitoring of POPs in the East Asian Region
From 29-31st January, 2003, a training session was held by Shimadzu Corporation, Japan, and UNU, for laboratory staff from eight laboratories that are participating in in the UNU project on Environmental Monitoring and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere - Monitoring of POPs in the East Asian Region. The training included methods for the collection and analysis of samples using GCMS equipment that has recently been provided for the laboratories by Shimadzu.

International Symposium on Impacts of POPs from Urban Areas

UNU has is planning to hold its next annual symposium on EDC's in Beijing, China in April, 2003. This Symposium is the fifth in a series of Symposia to be held by UNU on issues relating to chemical pollution in the East Asian Hydrosphere.announcement

2nd Asian Pacific International Conference on Pollutants Analysis and Control
The Institute of Environment and Resources (IER-CEFINEA) Vietnam National University -
Ho Chi Minh City, The International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC), The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) and The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) announce the call for abstracts for a conference to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, 1-3 December, 2003. The conference will cover issues related to the detection, assessment, monitoring and control of air and water pollutants. The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 30th, 2003.
