Fourth
UNU-ORI Joint International Workshop on Marine Environment - Ecosystem
Conservation in Coastal Areas
This event was held in Otsuchi, Japan from 11-17 February, 2004. It was
organized jointly by UNU, Ocean Research Institute of the University of
Tokyo and the Iwate Prefectural Government. This was the fourth in a series
of workshops that was initiated in 1999 involving young scholars and researchers
from Asia and the Asia-Pacific island nations.

A multidisciplinary team of lecturers focused on assessing, monitoring
and conserving biodiversity in mangrove ecosystems.

International Symposium on Impacts of POPs from Urban Areas
China-Japan Friendship Center for Environmental Protection
will host the 2004 UNU International Symposium on 24-25th
May, 2004 in Beijing, China. The symposium is the fifth in a series under
a UNU programme focusing on Environmental Pollution and Governance in
the East Asian Hydrosphere. Speakers from the region and invited experts
from other parts of the world will discuss the role of various land-based
emission sources in POPs pollution in the coastal areas, particularly
highlighting the effects of pollution from urban areas.

Development in Malaysia - Relevance of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals
(EDCs)” 17-18 May 2004
This
meeting, organized by the Malaysian Society of Pharmacology and Physiology
(MSPP), will bring together researchers to discuss new knowledge in endocrine
disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

Mr. Takaaki Miyaguchi joins the UNU Project
Mr.
Miyaguchi joins as a Project Assistant and he will be based at the UNU
Centre in Tokyo. He holds a Master’s degree from the Harris Graduate School
of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of
Science degree from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at
the University of Michigan. He has previous worked at the UNDP office
in New York and the Japan Research Institute in Tokyo.
