Environmental Monitoring and Governance in the East Asian Hydrosphere - Monitoring of POPs in the East Asian Region
With the support of Shimadzu Corporation, Japan, new GC/MS equipment has been sent to eight laboratories in East Asia for use in UNU's project on environmental monitoring. Junior staff from each of the participating laboratories will attend a training session in techniques for using the equipment, held at Hadano, Japan, 28-29th January, 2003.


International Workshop on Regional Environmental Quality in the East Asian Coastal Hydrosphere: Environmental Quality Guidelines and Capacity Development
As part of our activities on environmental monitoring, UNU and its partners will hold a two-day international workshop in Kwangju, Korea, 26-27th January, 2003. This workshop will focus on the interpretation of environmental monitoring data and the development of guidelines for environmental quality in coastal and inland waters in the East Asian region. workshop announcement


International Symposium on Impacts of POPs from Urban Areas

UNU has is planning to hold its next annual symposium on EDC's in Beijing, China in April, 2003. This Symposium is the fifth in a series of Symposia to be held by UNU on issues relating to chemical pollution in the East Asian Hydrosphere.announcement

2nd Asian Pacific International Conference on Pollutants Analysis and Control
The Institute of Environment and Resources (IER-CEFINEA) Vietnam National University -
Ho Chi Minh City, The International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC), The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) and The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) announce the call for abstracts for a conference to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, 1-3 December, 2003. The conference will cover issues related to the detection, assessment, monitoring and control of air and water pollutants. The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 30th, 2003. UNU-UNESCO International Course on Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems, 2003
Applications are now being accepted for the annual UNU-UNESCO International Course on Biodiversity in Mangrove Ecosystems, to be held at the Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, India. The deadline for completed applications is the 31st December 2002. further information



The Third Meeting of Asia Pacific Co-operation for the Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources in Biosphere Reserves and Similarly Managed Areas (ASPACO)
From 1-6 October, 2002, a meeting for the participants of the Asia-Pacific Co-operation for the Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources in Biosphere Reserves and Similar Managed Areas (ASPACO) was held in Okinawa, Japan on 1-6 October 2002. The meeting was jointly organised by UNESCO-MAB, UNU, International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), MAB-Japan, with the support from the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) and Ryukyus University, Okinawa, Japan.
