UNU-International Course (UNU-IC) Risk analysis tool workshop held on 30 May, 2006

Risk analysis tool workshop was held at the UN House (Tokyo) on 30 May, and UNU-IC participants had hands-on experience on how the risk analysis was carried out in the business and environment risk assessment processes. Ms. Mikiko Sawada, Hitachi Japan East Solutions. Ltd., kindly provided the training course. During the course, each participant was provided with a computer with Microsoft Excel and a trial version of a risk analysis tool, called @Risk. @Risk, by Palisade, is a Monte Carlo Simulation tool which helps its users to calculate probabilities of Excel model outputs, instead of single point estimations such as average, conservative and/or worst case values. The environmental application used in the course was a case study on "bioaccumulation of helptachlor in beef" introduced in a Princeton University Press publication, "Should we risk it?" written by Daniel Kammen and David Hassenzahl. After the workshop, a participant remarked that he finally started seeing an overall picture of what risk analysis is about.
