In this issue:  An Update on the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention, Dakar, Senegal 30 April – 4 May 2007.
In accordance with the Stockholm Convention, the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP3) took place from the April 30th through May 5th in Dakar, Senegal. The COP3 discussed challenging issues such as use of DDT for vector control purposes, non-conformity, establishment of regional centers, global monitoring plans, identification and quantification of POPs emission (toolkit), effectiveness evaluation, synergies with Basel Convention, technical transfer, financial mechanisms, and Best Available Technology and Best Environmental Practices for sound POPs management.

UNU-EHS involved new project, Water-related Information System for the Sustainable Development Of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam (WISDOM), is accepting PhD Scholarships and Junior Researcher positions.

 

Upcoming events

The 5th UNU & GIST Joint Programme Workshop on Sound Management of Hazardous Chemicals and Sustainable Energy (Oct. 30 ~ Nov. 1 2007, GIST, Gwangju, Korea)

Application to the workshop is free. Financial support (a round trip air ticket (economy class), meals and accommodation) will be provided for selected oral presenters from the developing countries.

Dioxin 2007 between 2-7 September 2007 in Tokyo, Japan

Dr. Masatoshi Morita, ESD’s programme advisor, is the symposium chair. Dioxin 2007 is nominally sponsored by UNU.
