Indonesia:

1. General description of why an area is selected
Sampling locations for POPs monitoring were determined at five cities in Indonesia which is located in Jawa Island. Jawa Island particularly has serious problem because about 60 % of the total population live in an area of 132,000 km2 and where 80 % of the country's factory are located producing 77 % of the products manufactured in Indonesia. Those concentration of population and industry could be resulted heavy pollution in the river water of the main cities in Jawa Island. On the other hand those rivers have function to fulfill human activities. Therefore the major cities will be surveyed for monitoring POPs in river water are Jakarta, Bogor, Semarang and Surabaya. Jakarta and Bogor city are located in in Western part of Jawa Island, Semarang in the central part of Jawa Island and Surabaya is in the Eastern part of Jawa Island.

2. Specific description of the location
Surabaya
Surabaya is the capital city of East Jawa Province. It is the second busiest and most populated city after Jakarta. The main activities of the city is as industrial, business and harbor city. There are many industrial activities located in this city. Two major rivers across the city are Kali Surabaya River and Kalimas River. Six water samples and four sediment samples will be collected from Surabaya.

Semarang
Semarang is the capital city of Central Jawa Province. The largest river passing through the city is Banjir Kanal Barat River which is used as water sources for drinking water treatment plant of Semarang City. Six sampling sites were determined at Banjir Kanal Timur and Banjir Kanal Barat River and one sampling site was determined at the bay in northen part of Semarang city. Five water samples and four sediment samples will be collected from Semarang.

Bogor
Bogor is located in the southern part of Jakarta city. It is an agricultural area. Sampling location was determined at Ciliwung River. Three water samples and two sediment samples will be collected from Bogor.

Jakarta
As the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta is the busiest and the most populated city in Indonesia. The sampling location for Jakarta was determined at Ciliwung river. The river is running along a line from South (Bogor) to North through the city. The upstream is located in Puncak mountain, run through the Bogor city and on through Jakarta. The downstream is located at Marina Beach in Jakarta Bay. The Ciliwung river is used to be the source of water supply system. Due to the condition of the river in Jakarta , nowadays the function of this river has been changed. In Bogor this river is still used for water sources of drinking water treatment plant. Five water samples and three sediment samples will be collected from Jakarta.
