Stockholm Convention to
prevent global POPs pollution entered into force from May 2004,
and the first COP will be held in May this year. In this Convention, a mechanism to register
new POPs chemicals was established, and researches to promote identification
of new POPs should be encouraged.
In addition to various organochlorine compounds, other organohalogens,
such as organobromine and organofluorine
compounds, have been widely used in various aspects in our life. They frequently tend to be persistent
and bioaccumulative in nature, and thus have been
studied extensively. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)
and its derivatives as well as other perfluorinated
surfactants are among the major topics in recent years. Unintentionally produced compounds, such
as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are
another high priority compounds.
In this presentation,
some of our researches on organofluorine chemicals
and atmospheric particulate matters, including PAHs,
will be introduced.
