Fourth UNU-ORI Joint International Workshop
Ecosystem Conservation in Coastal Areas
Otsuchi, Japan; 11-17 February, 2004
Workshop Overview:
The United Nations University (UNU) and the Ocean Research Institute (ORI)
of the University of Tokyo jointly organized in Otsuchi, Japan the fourth
International Workshop on Marine Environment. This workshop was
supported by the Iwate Prefectural Government and the UNESCO project:
"Asia-Pacific Co-operation for the Sustainable Use Renewable Natural
Resources in Biosphere Reserves and Similar Managed Areas" (ASPACO).
The focus of the discussion was on understanding of the ecosystem in
coastal areas and the enclosed water bodies with a particular emphasis on
material recycling and environmental capacity for aqua culture, and
pollution in coastal areas and its impact on the living resources. The
workshop includee lectures from leading experts in this region on the
subject matter. All workshop participants made brief presentations about
their own research programmes, bringing a regional perspective to the
meeting.
In-depth discussions were held to exchange ideas and to develop further
joint activities. A field trip was organized to provide a closer look at
Japanese field research activities in the Iwate Prefecture's coastal areas.
