First Announcement and Invitation for Applications

THE APPLICATION IS CLOSED.

 

The United Nations University (UNU) and the Ocean Research Institute (ORI) of the University of Tokyo will jointly hold in Otsuchi, Japan the sixth International Workshop on Marine Environment.  This workshop will be supported by the Iwate Prefectural Government and the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS).

 

The focus of the discussion will be on understanding of the ecosystem in coastal areas with a particular emphasis on the followings; 1) tsunami related issues including importance of mangroves and forests on coastal areas; 2) sustainable fishery; and 3) shellfish poison.

 

The workshop will include lectures from leading experts in this region on the subject matter.  All workshop participants will be expected to make brief presentations about their own research programmes, bringing a regional perspective to the meeting.  In-depth discussions will be held to exchange ideas and to develop further joint activities.  A field trip will be organized to provide a closer look at Japanese field research activities in the Iwate Prefecturefs coastal areas.

The UNU is soliciting applications from young scholars and researchers representing the countries in Asia and the Asia-Pacific island nations.  We particularly encourage participation from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – countries that are currently included the UNU researcher network on coastal hydrosphere. 

 

For a limited number of selected participants representing and based in developing countries, the UNU will be able to provide travel grants on a competitive basis.  These grants will cover travel and related expenses.  Application letters, including brief biographical information (not more than 2 pages) and a list of three references, should be sent directly to Mr. Takaaki Miyaguchi (Email: miyaguchi@hq.unu.edu or fax: +81-3-3406-7347).  Applications received after 1 August 2005 will not be considered.
